How difficulties in upward voice lead to lateral voice: a case study of a Chinese hospital

Purpose The aim of this study is to explore and unpack the notion lateral voice within context a Chinese hospital. Design/methodology/approach A qualitative design was used, involving interviews 24 medical personnel from public hospital in mainland China. This included two focus groups (eight participants each) physicians nurses, eight individual with managers, including chief nurse directors centre. Findings findings reveal that top-down contexts respect for hierarchy, direct vertical discouraged but fills gap can lead some circumstances pathway collective voice. Interestingly, finds fear damaging relationships peers may also discourage cases, leading silence altogether. Contradictory outcomes arising employees working are discussed. Originality/value makes an original contribution literature through exploring understudied target, is, voicing peers. In doing so, demonstrates importance as important component behaviour.
